Purpose, Scope, and Foundation

OpenCausation.orgSM is an independent, open, noncommercial educational resource dedicated to improving the clarity, consistency, and evidence basis of causation analysis. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or a product of the American Medical Association.

The site provides general educational information only. It does not provide medical, legal, or case-specific causation advice. Case-specific causation determinations require an objective diagnosis, complete records, clinical judgment, exposure analysis, relevant scientific evidence, consideration of alternative explanations, and application of the legal standards of the appropriate jurisdiction. Case examples are hypothetical and illustrative only.

This resource is grounded in established causation-analysis principles, including the framework set out in the AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Disease and Injury Causation, 2nd ed. (2014), occupational and epidemiologic methods, and related causation-analysis materials developed by J. Mark Melhorn, MD.
